SIA security roles: more than just being vigilant on the shopfloor or office building

July 11, 2020

For many people, the professional security industry is perceived to be a sector which simply focuses on roles that are solely based on being vigilant within retail or office establishments.

What people fail to acknowledge is that security is varied and is more than just physical. We have touched on cybersecurity in a few articles. But another aspect that people overlook with SIA roles, is that they touch on bigger and global issues linking to defence, terrorism and intelligence.

Our recent video released this week for #talkaboutitTuesdays saw QCS talking to Sarah Harvie. She has kindly spoken to us on transitioning from a security receptionist position where she was liaising with security contractors building accommodation for soldiers to becoming head of information security at Merlin Entertainment.

Sarah’s starting point in reception required her to make passes and grant access for contractors and workers for vehicles and buildings. With the job came a lot of management particularly when looking at data and risk. What many people don’t recognise with SIA security roles is that risk assessment is not just making sure premises are safe for visitors, employees and members of the public, actually thorough coordination and communication with other actors are a vital aspect of the role.

The police force, the home office, government officials and in some cases military and intelligence forces. Risks are not just minor setbacks that are affected by one event or individual, but rather many factors. International terrorism, organised crime and even global health pandemics like we have seen this year with COVID-19. Thus, SIA security roles in general don’t just contribute to the safety of national or local level wellbeing but rather an international consensus for important issues.

Varied SIA security roles

Sarah’s transition into a new company where she was one of many security specialised experts meant she was able to learn new perspectives, interpretations and skills from others who have varied security backgrounds. The new role also enabled her to gain insight into managing and delegating a team.

For many jobs in a range of sectors, risk assessment plays an important role in shaping decisions. Whether it is a discussion on company changes or financial matters, every job has a risk. What people need to acknowledge when considering a new role is that some of the requirements asked for can be transferable from your previous roles. Even if you are moving from public to private corporations, the principle is still the same but the target audience or clientele you are facing differs. Nonetheless, it is more how you approach a situation as opposed to the skill set or prior experience you had that allows you to fulfil a job.

Risk assessment was just one of many things Sarah touched on throughout her interview, but we know SIA security roles provide much more in terms of experience and skills. Whether you are set to go into another security role or seeking a change in sectors, SIA security roles still provide you with assets and experience you can apply within many tasks and situations.
