SIA Investigation shows the regulator is getting serious about compliance and personnel due diligence. So let it be a warning to all firms, contractors and subcontractors - ensure you know exactly WHO is working for you!
Summer and Festival season is, without doubt, one of the busiest times of the year for security firms. However, with plenty of events to secure comes the difficult task of finding enough seasonal or ad hoc workers. Many contractors will subparts of the supply out however recent SIA investigations should act as a warning to all, to ensure compliance and due diligence procedures are in place and adhered to.
The SIA have investigated Security Firm LS Armour for allegedly supplying cloned badges to unlicensed stewards at a number of festivals across the UK.
The SIA's deputy director advised that promoters - who have a duty of care towards festival goers, "must take all reasonable steps to ensure the person named on and in possession of the licence are the same person by requiring them to provide further evidence of identity."
The breach was taken very seriously with two arrests made and a seizure of business records.
Director of LS Armour Security, Erica Lloyd defending the firm over the SIA Investigation stated, the current and only method of valid license checks - being the online SIA Register of Licence Holders (https://www.sia.homeoffice.gov.uk/Pages/licensing-rolh.aspx) is "simplistic" and "inadequate".
This was an unprecedented move by the SIA but a move which should be a clear warning to all security suppliers across the UK.
