Post Covid life-have you got your ACT together?

June 21, 2021

Almost a year and a half of restrictions, social distancing and wearing masks in public space we are finally preparing ourselves for a summer where we can return back to ‘normal life.’  As we delve back into the places of interest and hobbies we loved doing the most pre-pandemic, we start to think about the big events, football matches, music festivals and club nights. People are ready for the ‘best summer yet’ as we move away from social restrictions, but as we go back to normality, the security threats which we faced becomes a risk again. In particular potential terror threats.

It has been 4 years since the Manchester bombing at the Ariana Grande concert – the independent public inquiry report which has just been released can be read here, and the London Bridge shooting; both were the last 2 terrorist attacks to take place in the UK.

Since this event, national security has been on high alert to prevent another atrocity taking place. Now that events are set to be going ahead and people are wanting to stay outdoors, what is the likelihood to see another attack taking place? Very high apparently.

The ACT app

This is an app which was developed last year and helps businesses and organisations stay on top of any potential threats as well as tips on how to stay vigilant. Since last year, the forefront of our minds has been focused on the pandemic, but this does not completely wipe out potential terror threats. The ACT app has the advantage of being accessible on your smart phones and tablets which allows business owners to receive alerts on the go, use instant messaging to reach out for help and get access to policing training.

Changing how we get our ACT together

Prior to the pandemic, many offices and workplaces had designated members of staff to train others in the event of a fire, lockdown or terrorist attack. The ACT app has allowed many to access resources and support from home and now provides training for employees and not just managers.

Yes, it is true, big corporations and large buildings are seen as more at risk from attacks but people tend to forget a terrorist attack can happen anywhere and target anyone. As we have seen in the past, children, the elderly and the vulnerable are still all at risk. Public transport, shopping centres and even busy roads can still hold potential threats.

The ACT app not just helps protect those within the workplace, but the extra training provided can allow people to pass on crucial information to family, friends and loved ones. The advantage of having information shared digitally is that notices, photos and links can be shared with a tap of a button. We can screenshot to make alerts go viral within our social and public realms.

Where do I sign up?

Details can be found on the GOV website which encourages big and small businesses to join this app.  The ACT app now reaches over 100,000 users which have allowed them to develop emergency response plans, provide feedback to the counter terrorism unit and to maintain close contact with Police and security services to prevent any high level threats from emerging within business premises or public space.
