Met Police WhatsApp scandal - a lesson for frontline workers?

February 22, 2022

Less than a year ago we wrote an article concerning the tragic death of Sarah Everard. Her murder was a saddening reminder that those who are supposed to protect us from violence can be the very perpetrators of said crimes.

Now, once again, the Metropolitan Police are in the news for all the wrong reasons. An investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has uncovered disgraceful private messages between police officers at Charing Cross. With each scandal, it has become more and more evident that there is a culture of racism, bigotry and misogyny in the Met Police.

With trust in the police shaken by horrific incidences such as the murder of Sarah Everard, where does frontline security stand? From “casual” sexism and racism to violence against minorities; all workforces should be looking inwards and tackling problematic behaviour at its roots.
Being in charge of security is an incredibly important position that, unfortunately, can be taken advantage of without proper training and accountability. It is important to ensure that security behaves decently both within their teams and towards the public.
So what can be done?

Creating more diverse security teams is the key to upholding inclusive standards in the workplace. If the demographic of a security team can reflect the people they are protecting it is far more likely that the relationship will be a fair and respectful one.

Once the WhatsApp messages hit the media, the public were rightly outraged and Cressida Dick stepped down as Metropolitan Police Chief. Many questioned her ability to combat and root out a culture of racism, sexism, bullying and homophobia.

Change must come from the top and it is our leaders that hold the reigns of progression.  Our security teams are as public facing as the police and it is paramount that as an industry we retain the respect and most importantly the trust of those we protect.  Scandals such as this show that no institution is exempt from internal delinquent behaviour so we must as supervisors, managers and leaders ensure we know our teams, we know our people and we continually instil an inclusive and empowering environment.
