Financial support during Covid-19 has been a key focus for many people, particularly those who are unable to work from home. Consistent changes to lockdown have caused uncertainty and for some of you, there is some confusion as to what you are and aren’t entitled to. The team at QCS thought to provide you with a quick guide on what’s available in the UK.
Furlough
This is when your employer has no current work for you, in some cases, this means temporary leave. However, you might be eligible to claim 80% of your wages via the Coronavirus Retention Scheme. You will need to contact your employer first, as they will have to claim from HMRC on your behalf. Further information can be found on the GOV UK website.
Self-Employed Support
Those who are self-employed can receive support from the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme. Like furlough, the scheme will allow you to claim a grant of up to 80% of your trading profits. This will be available for 3 months, but talks are in process for a possible extension. As it is a grant, you won’t be required to pay it back. The amount you receive in grants will depend on your profits over the past 3 years. If you are eligible, you will be contacted by HMRC by mid-May. The online service is currently not available but further details can be found here.
Universal Credit
If you’re currently unemployed or on low income, you’ll be eligible for universal credit which can help with living costs. This is paid monthly and can help you if you have a health condition, children or need assistance with paying rent. How much you receive is determined by your employment status in the past year and monthly earnings since 2019. Further information on universal credit and how to apply can be found here.
Security Industry Support
Some of you who are still working from home particularly in the cyber security industry, might be able to gain support with free subscription and access to online software and services to help with remote and teleworking settings. To see what online services are available to you check out City Security Magazine.
Please check with your employers to see if your company provides any internal support financially or with public and personal services. You may be entitled to support with groceries, childcare and healthcare through your company.
We hope this has clarified financial support available for you during Covid-19. We know this time is difficult, but we hope the government and employment support can help with maintaining living costs. As always stay safe and only go out if necessary.
