CV writing- Moving ahead in jobs and careers

October 30, 2020

“To achieve great things, you need a plan and not quite enough time.” - Leonard Bernstein

CV writing for the majority is a tiring job to do especially whilst we’re in the process of applying for jobs and switching career paths. Trying to fit every shred of experience on 2 pages and tailoring it to every job we’re applying for, let’s face it, writing up an entire application is a job itself. We all know the struggles of making an application as thoroughly connected to the job description in order to secure at least an interview or progress to the hiring stage.

As we approach the final months of the year, thoughts will turn to our achievements, downfalls and reflections on everything that has taken place in 2020. Whilst being in a global pandemic, we have dealt with hurdles financially, mentally and physically with budget cuts and redundancies at every corner. This has triggered many to consider alternative career fields, jobs and even take up training for additional skills. The team at QuickClick have come up with some pointers to help you with tailoring your CV and ensuring your potential is shown on job applications. We have taken some inspiration from a TED talk released by writer Meg Jay who speaks about career development in her books and podcasts.

Industry connections

Something that we are accustomed to hearing quite often- ‘it’s not what you know but, who you know.’ People that work in the industry are the best way of gaining insight into the jobs you wish to pursue. If you have no connections to individuals within the industry, fear not, networking is now easier than before with technology and social media becoming the main hub of meeting people. LinkedIn and even mutual contacts are also a great way to build a pool of contacts within the industry. Jay makes a reference that “weak ties are like bridges you cannot see all the way across, so there’s no telling where they will lead.” (Jay, 2012). In other words, strangers and people you don’t really affiliate yourself with, tend to be the ones that pave way for opportunities and job prospects. LinkedIn and online platforms aren’t just the only way, if you want to take a plunge into the unknown, there are ways to network face to face through job fairs, seminars and workshops.

CV Workshops and services

There are organisations and agencies which specialise in helping to personalise your CV and make it stand out for specific job roles. Depending on the field you want to enter, many are tailored to an industry. These services allow you get a one-to-one approach and seek advice and support from a consultant. Here at Quick Click, we provide a CV writing service to help you apply for roles you wish to pursue both in security and non-security positions. Our team of experts who hold experience in recruitment can provide you with a personalised direction and pointers to enable you to get ahead in your career.
