Covid-19 Vaccine passports - Help or Hassle?

May 07, 2021

With restrictions being lifted in time for summer and establishments slowly returning back to normal, we are certain that many of you are preparing yourself for the most enjoyable season ahead!

That being said, we certainly haven’t managed to get rid of Covid-19 entirely.  We already have Track and Trace everywhere we go, we saw the recent trial festival in Liverpool where all revellers were tested pre entry and we’ve all heard the rumours of a vaccine passport to permit people into venues, events and even some countries- when will it end?

What has this got to do with security?

Those working in frontline security will be the first point of contact when it comes to permitting entry into venues.  Soon it may not just be ID, tickets and invitations that need to be checked.

Although the restrictions have been lifted, the pandemic still continues with various parts of the world facing new virus strains. From a health point of view, there does need to be some form of monitoring to ensure that the general public are kept safe from those infected. However there are certainly some issues that could arise if vaccine passports are to become mandatory for entry into venues.

Fraudulent documents

As frontline security, we’re more than certain that you have come across fake ID and tickets – could we see the same issues arise with vaccine passports? BBC News reports that more than 34 million people in the UK have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine – that’s a little over half.  What does this mean for the remaining members of the public who have not been vaccinated or refuse to – could there be a new market for fake vaccine passports?

Longer wait times and potential loss of business

Those of you who are security at pubs, bars and clubs know the drill. The queues to get into the venue will see you having impatient customers standing for hours to try and get in. It’s bad enough trying to make sure everyone is seen to as soon as possible but imagine the extra time dedicated to vaccine passports, checking temperatures and making sure documents provided are legitimate. Some of you might currently work in venues which use the NHS track and trace app which puts off some customers from coming in for personal and security reasons; many feel it is a hassle to have an app to prove they are not a health risk. Longer wait times might actually put people off going to bars and clubs due to lengthy checks and this could see customer numbers drop for various businesses.

Testing there and then

On top of longer wait times to check documents, it has been suggested that testing upon entry will be carried out. In this case, it would not be front line security doing these specific swab tests and instant results but rather individuals from the medical field. Having the passport and tests taking place creates more congestion which may put a lot of people off going to specific events and venues.

The new precautions are starting to resemble airport security checks.

Other countries seem to be ok without it

Australia, China and New Zealand are just some of the countries that you will have heard have resumed back to normal. Most public spaces are not adhering to social distancing measures and life is pretty much normal for those living there. Venues have opened back up and no vaccine passports are required there. If a country bigger than us like China has not rolled out the vaccine passports, would it really be necessary in the UK?

We understand from a health perspective the reasons behind a rollout of a “vaccine passport”, but for frontline security who will be responsible for its delivery, maintaining social order and appeasing those left waiting I long queues – is this an additional responsibility that we really could do without?

Perhaps one way around it would be to have a check in system – again similar to airlines, where vaccine passports, or evidence of the same is uploaded prior to getting to a venue?  Just some food for thought.
