COVID-19- Thoughts after the second lockdown and Security in the new year

December 01, 2020

It’s officially December which means the UK has come to the end of the second lockdown. From Wednesday 2nd December, we will see ourselves going back into the tier categories and still facing curfews as well as restrictions with the number of people we are able to see outside of the household. As we approach the final month of 2020, thoughts turn to what lies ahead in the new year. For those working in security, the year ahead is still one of importance in maintaining the safety of the general public.

Vaccine security

Many of you will have heard the news about the creation of a COVID-19 vaccine to help with keeping numbers to a minimum throughout this pandemic. Now the vaccine has been widely approved across various regions of the world, this has triggered international state-sponsored hackers to try and access sensitive and confidential information linked to the vaccine. Intelligence and cybersecurity will be on full alert to ensure that information isn’t leaked and mishandled. Hackers will be targeting those involved in the production and research for the vaccine.

Security at home and information confidentiality

Since October, we have been made to download a COVID-19 tracker app to trace where we go when visiting shops and food outlets. This has meant a lot of us have been careful with our smartphones and ensuring emails, passwords and personal information are secure on devices we use frequently. Alongside track and trace, many of us have been advised to continue working from home which has led to a demand in home office security software and training to ensure work and confidential information are protected from unlawful access. The new year in this aspect will be set to bring out more opportunities for those in the security field particularly in cybersecurity.

Frontline security

As shops become open to the public during this festive month, talks are turning to retailers being able to extend trading times to 24 hours in the lead up to Christmas. Extended hours will mean there will be a demand in frontline security staff who are able to work nights and early mornings. Overall, the security industry has received both demand and setbacks in the industry in 2020, but as we continue into the new year and the need to protect members of the public both physically and virtually, security workers may become crucial to the daily operations for a lot of establishments.
