Many of us feel pressured when starting out in a new role, especially a security manager role. Expectations are already set, and we are often determined or at least expected to match or outperform our predecessor. Making a positive first impression is key.
We have done several articles speaking on different security roles i.e. Door security role, Cybersecurity and Concierge roles. Whether you are stepping up in your company or moving to a new organisation entering a security manager role here are 3 quick tips to help you get ahead in your first 4 weeks on the job:
1. Assessing and analysing the current security provisions
Assess the current security provisions. Analyse the current processes and evaluate whether they work and remain functional. Coming in and looking at a security management programme with a fresh pair of eyes has its advantages, as you are more likely to spot vulnerabilities and risks that have developed unnoticed over time. Regulatory, legislative, and even changes in trends and business activity can lead to outdated risk assessments.
2. Understanding your Security team capabilities
Get to know the capabilities of your security team. This will help determine how incident ready your staff are. A one on one interview to get to know your staff can build a rapport and retain the long service of members.
3. Analysing how secure the security process and procedures are
Run patrol tests to analyse how secure and efficient the current security processes and procedures are. This is a good way to see your team in action. Using these exercises is a good way to foresee potential weak areas and a great team-building activity.
